CFLoquence: News and Reviews from Your Library

Congratulations to Ruthanne L’Hommedieu for winning the Summer Gift Bag! The gift bag was overflowing with goodies donated by local businesses and organizations. Many thanks go out to the community for supporting the library through your donations.
Ruthanne read eighteen books during the Summer Reading Challenge. She’s an eclectic reader, enjoying new releases and older gems from a variety of genres. The following are her top recommendations from her summer reading list:
An Apple for the Creature, edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner. This collection of thirteen original stories is the perfect back-to-school read for those who love the paranormal. Vampires, shapeshifters, zombies and ghosts fill the classrooms and roam the hallways. Fans of Sookie Stackhouse will find their favorite telepathic heroine making an appearance in “Playing Possum” by Charlaine Harris. Also included is the highly praised “Magic Tests” by Illona Andrews. Check out this collection for lessons in the supernatural.
The First Mountain Man: Preacher by William W. Johnstone. Set in the 1800s, this is the origin story of Preacher, an adventurous boy who becomes a rugged hero. Preacher leads a train of sixty wagons on the treacherous Oregon Trail in a novel that is both an adventure and a coming-of-age tale.  Along with Ruthanne, many of our patrons love Johnstone’s western series.
Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich. In this new release, Holly Brennan is widowed at age thirty-two. During her husband’s illness and death, she developed an eating disorder as a coping mechanism and gained 80lbs. She’s embarrassed by her size when seated on a couch flight next to Logan Montgomery, a gorgeous professional trainer, but captures his attention with her wit. Logan offers to become her trainer and falls for Holly in this romantic comedy.
What was your favorite summer read? Stop by the CFL and let us know. We hope everyone enjoyed our adult, teen and children’s Summer Reading Programs. We had a blast! And while summer may be ending, the fun isn’t over. We have many great programs scheduled throughout September.
Downton Library
Join us for tea, crumpets and British drama on the big screen. Starting on September 11th at 6pm, we’re showing one episode per week of a wildly popular British series. The drama begins with the years leading up to World War I, featuring the complicated lives and relationships of an aristocratic family and their servants in a world where social and gender roles are rapidly changing. This program is free and open to the public, ages 16 and up. For more information, contact Krista at kbriggs@ncls.org or call 386-3712.
CFL Book Group
A slight change in plans: the Book Group will be meeting on September 11th at 6pm instead of September 4th. This gives readers one more week to check out Richard Russo’s Empire Falls, the novel being discussed at the next group meeting. Come share your love of reading with your fellow patrons.
Children’s Programs
The September activities calendar is now available at the library! Registration has begun for the fall and winter sessions of Toddler Storytime, a program at the Canton Free Library for children 18-35 months of age accompanied by a caregiver. The start dates for the three possible sessions are September 16th, October 21st and November 25th, and each runs for four weeks. Programs involve books, songs, finger plays, felt board stories and art activities, and take place on Monday mornings from 10:30-11:00 AM. The program is free, but space is limited. Please call 386-3712 ext 4 or email vwhite@ncls.org to register.
Second Saturday Storytime
We’re excited to announce a wonderful new weekend program for our young patrons and their caregivers. Miss Christine will be storytelling on September 14th at 11am in the Children’s Room.  Registration is helpful, but drop-ins are welcome. Register with Miss Christine at 714-2510 or email ckschrauth@gmail.com.
CFL Anime Club
Looking for a place where your Rukia cosplay can be admired? Join the CFL Anime Club on Wednesdays from 3-5pm to share your love of the art of Japanese animated movies and series. Teens unfamiliar with anime are also invited. We’ll teach you all about it!
CFL Game Club
Let your geek flag fly high on Monday, September 9th from 3-5pm! We have board games, card games and video games. The CFL Roleplaying Group, an extension to our Game Club, meets on Saturday, September 7th to play tabletop RPGs. Come role your character with campaign leader David Crowell. For more information about our Anime and Game clubs, contact Krista at kbriggs@ncls.org or 386-3712.

CFLoquence: News and Reviews From Your Library

College Reads
College students are beginning to roll back into our quiet town, filling the streets with the energy that comes with a new semester. At the same time, many local kids from the class of 2013 are both excited and nervous to be leaving home for college for the very first time. Catch the spirit with our college reads! We have campus fiction as well as practical and humorous guides to college life to usher in the new school year.
If you’re a freshman headed off to campus, check out Harlan Coben’s The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College. In this guide, Coben takes you behind the scenes to prepare you for those experiences your guidance counselor never told you about.  Included are crazy stories from students at over 100 college campuses.
We’ve added the following 2014 College Board guides to our reference collection: the College Handbook, Getting Financial Aid, the Book of Majors and the Scholarship Handbook. Stop in to peruse this wealth of information for students and prospective students. (College Board guides are located in the YA New Book section).
Even if you aren’t enrolled this semester, you can experience college life through our campus fiction. Attend Dupont University (inspired by Ivy League campuses) with a brilliant but backwoods student in Tom Wolfe’s novel I am Charlotte Simmons.  Charlotte expects to find herself in an intellectual playground; instead, she’s surrounded by materialistic, partying rich kids who make her feel like an awkward outsider. Find out how Charlotte is transformed and influences her peers in this critique of 21st century universities.
Look at college life through the eyes of a professor in Straight Man by Richard Russo.  In this novel, William Henry Devereaux Jr. is the reluctant chairman of the English department of a Pennsylvanian college that is struggling financially. Throughout the course of one week, Devereaux battles a variety of real and imagined issues in this comedic adventure.
If you participated in our Summer Reading Challenge, don’t forget to turn in your reading logs by Friday, August 23rd for a chance to win a Summer Gift Bag filled with goodies: North Country red wine, New York maple syrup, maple sugar candies, Harmony Farm honey, raspberry jam, Noble Farm beef jerky, Wild Water skin and bath products, gift certificates to The Glow and The Blackbird Café, a reading mug, a library t-shirt, a Book of Secrets and a Groundbreaking Reads journal. CFLoquence: News and Reviews From Your Library

Campfire Reads
These cool August nights remind me of going to summer camp as a teen. Aside from being one of my most memorable summertime places, camp is a popular setting for authors. Remote wilderness locations lit by bonfires are the ideal places to craft a romance…or stage a crime. Indulge in our campfire reads this summer, the perfect accompaniment to s’mores, cricket music and a sky full of stars.
In Joy Fielding’s Shadow Creek, Valerie Rowe sets out on a camping trip to the Adirondacks. An unexpected change of plans leaves her with an uncomfortable traveling party: two of her oddest friends, her rebellious daughter and her estranged husband’s fiancée. While Valerie is dealing with their issues, a pair of killers is roaming the woods. When her daughter disappears, her less than perfect camping trip turns into a fight for survival. Check out this thriller set in our own backwoods, if you dare.
Our tween, teen and adult patrons enjoy the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. In The Lightning Thief, book one of this series, Percy discovers that he is more than human at Camp Half-Blood, a state-of-the-art training facility for young demigods. Unfortunately, Percy is wrongfully accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. Join him as he masters his new powers and seeks to clear his name. Suspect that you might be a half-blood? Visit rickriordan.com for a quiz that determines your demigod status along with a map of Camp Half-Blood and a Daily Activity Schedule. Our Young Adult Specialist, Krista Briggs, recommends you revisit this beloved series before seeing the newly released film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in theaters.
For our younger readers, we have Cam Jansen and the Summer Camp Mysteries: A Super Special by David A. Adler. Cam and her best friend Eric head to Camp Eagle Lake where they find outdoor adventure and three unexpected mysteries. Cam uses her photographic memory to solve these mysteries and makes new friends along the way.
We hope you are having fun with our Summer Reading Challenge. It’s not too late to participate! Just grab a reading log at the Patron Services desk and use a shovel sticker to mark each book you complete. For every geological era completed, you’ll get a ticket for a chance to win a summer gift bag filled with treats: North Country red wine, New York maple syrup, maple sugar candies, Harmony Farm honey, raspberry jam, Noble Farm beef jerky, Wild Water skin and bath products, gift certificates to The Glow and The Blackbird Café, a reading mug, a library t-shirt, a Book of Secrets and a Groundbreaking Reads journal. Reading logs must be turned in to the Patron Services desk by Friday, August 23rd. The winner will be announced on Monday, August 26th.

Children’s Programs
Children's programming will resume in September when school begins. Until then, remember to complete and return your child's Reading Record to the children's room for a prize bag.

Teen Events
We continue to go “Beneath the Surface” during our teen Summer Reading Program. Join the Anime Club on Wednesdays at 3pm for a supernatural adventure set in the Tokyo Underworld. Be prepared for gang wars, shady medical experiments and a headless motorcycle rider.
Teen programs are designed for ages 13-19. For more information, email kbriggs@ncls.org or call 386-3712.
