CFLoquence: News and Reviews From Your Library

Groundbreaking Reads
They break through the earth, rotting and mindless but powerful in number. They swarm in your home, hungry for your flesh. ZOMBIES! Are you prepared?  Whether you’re looking for mere fiction or helpful handbooks, Canton Free Library has several books to help equip you for the zombie apocalypse.
To begin your training, grab The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks. This illustrated and comprehensive guide covers zombie behavior, weapon training and adaption of your home in the event of prolonged sieges. Brooks offers many tips such as “get up the staircase, then destroy it” and “no place is safe, only safer.”
Continue your education with World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. The author includes first-hand testimonials of survivors during the plague years.  Horror fills the pages of this zombie apocalypse tale. Read the story that was made into one of this summer’s most popular films!
In Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, learn from gritty heroine Briar Wilkes when she travels into the zombie infested city of Seattle to rescue her 16-year-old son.  The first book in The Clockwork Century series, Boneshaker is an action-packed steampunk adventure filled with a quirky cast of characters.  If you like Cherie Priest’s style, continue the series with Clementine and Ganymede.
Think you know everything there is to know about zombies? Meet “R,” a zombie who finds he is falling in love with a girl named Julie instead of craving her brains for his next meal. Find out if R has a chance at romance and a human life in Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion.
Stop by the CFL for more groundbreaking titles and to sign up for our summer reading challenge. And remember: remove the head; destroy the brain.

Children’s Events
This month Miss Val and our little patrons “Dig into Reading” with stories, crafts and music. On July 11th at 2pm, the NYS Thompson Park Zoo brings little critters to the First Presbyterian Church for our “Diggers and Underground Dwellers” event. Learn all about visiting animals and their habitats.
Hit the Taylor Park beach with Val on July 18th at 2pm. There will be stories, a water fight, hula hooping and more. For more information about the Summer Reading Program, email vwhite@ncls.org or call 386-3712 ext. 4.

Miss Val’s Pick:
"Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bicycle by Chris Raschka perfectly captures the experience of learning to ride a bike: the ups and downs, the bumps and scraps, the frustration, the encouragement from other, and then finally, the exhilaration when everything clicks and the rider is off and pedaling like the wind! I remember my dad teaching me to ride my purple bike with its white banana seat on the long runways of the abandoned airport near my house, perhaps one of the most vivid and joyful memories of my childhood! This book celebrates this most wonderful childhood milestone."

In other news, we have a brand new shelving unit! Our new books have relocated to the main reading room near the front desk. Now you can browse our newest titles in one place. Stop by the front desk and we’ll happily guide you to the new location.
