Pirate
Reads
Ahoy,
me hearties! The 19th o’ September be Talk Like a Pirate Day. Set
yer sails for the Canton Free Library and loot the shelves for adventures on
the high seas.
For
yer wee bairns, grab Shiver Me Letters: A
Pirate ABC by June Sobel. An alligator captain and his swashbuckling crew plunder
the alphabet. C is for cannonball and D for Doubloon in this illustrated
escapade. The crew will have to walk the plank unless they find every last
letter.
Young
buccaneers and seasoned sailors will enjoy Pirates!
by Celia Rees. In this novel, Minerva Sharpe and Nancy Kingston ditch their sewing
needles and escape on the pirate ship named Deliverance.
Minerva flees a life of slavery while Nancy, a merchant’s daughter, avoids an
arranged marriage. Both girls find they prefer the camaraderie and freedom of
pirate life over their roles as young women in eighteenth century Jamaica.
Old sea dogs looking for uncharted waters? For
a contemporary pirate adventure, check out Pirate
Alley by Stephen Coonts. Bloodthirsty Somali pirates attack a
luxury cruise sailing the Red Sea. They demand a ransom of $200 million within
seven days, or they will execute their hostages. Jake Grafton, Tommy Carmellini
and a team of CIA agents and Navy Seals work to save the hostages and uncover a
dangerous conspiracy.
A trove of many more sea tales are
buried in yer library! Drop by and the CFL crew will pillage for treasures wit’
ye. To brush up on your pirate lingo, visit www.talklikeapirate.com.
