CFLoquence: News and Reviews From Your Library

College Reads
College students are beginning to roll back into our quiet town, filling the streets with the energy that comes with a new semester. At the same time, many local kids from the class of 2013 are both excited and nervous to be leaving home for college for the very first time. Catch the spirit with our college reads! We have campus fiction as well as practical and humorous guides to college life to usher in the new school year.
If you’re a freshman headed off to campus, check out Harlan Coben’s The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College. In this guide, Coben takes you behind the scenes to prepare you for those experiences your guidance counselor never told you about.  Included are crazy stories from students at over 100 college campuses.
We’ve added the following 2014 College Board guides to our reference collection: the College Handbook, Getting Financial Aid, the Book of Majors and the Scholarship Handbook. Stop in to peruse this wealth of information for students and prospective students. (College Board guides are located in the YA New Book section).
Even if you aren’t enrolled this semester, you can experience college life through our campus fiction. Attend Dupont University (inspired by Ivy League campuses) with a brilliant but backwoods student in Tom Wolfe’s novel I am Charlotte Simmons.  Charlotte expects to find herself in an intellectual playground; instead, she’s surrounded by materialistic, partying rich kids who make her feel like an awkward outsider. Find out how Charlotte is transformed and influences her peers in this critique of 21st century universities.
Look at college life through the eyes of a professor in Straight Man by Richard Russo.  In this novel, William Henry Devereaux Jr. is the reluctant chairman of the English department of a Pennsylvanian college that is struggling financially. Throughout the course of one week, Devereaux battles a variety of real and imagined issues in this comedic adventure.
If you participated in our Summer Reading Challenge, don’t forget to turn in your reading logs by Friday, August 23rd for a chance to win a Summer Gift Bag filled with goodies: North Country red wine, New York maple syrup, maple sugar candies, Harmony Farm honey, raspberry jam, Noble Farm beef jerky, Wild Water skin and bath products, gift certificates to The Glow and The Blackbird CafĂ©, a reading mug, a library t-shirt, a Book of Secrets and a Groundbreaking Reads journal. Campfire Reads
These cool August nights remind me of going to summer camp as a teen. Aside from being one of my most memorable summertime places, camp is a popular setting for authors. Remote wilderness locations lit by bonfires are the ideal places to craft a romance…or stage a crime. Indulge in our campfire reads this summer, the perfect accompaniment to s’mores, cricket music and a sky full of stars.
In Joy Fielding’s Shadow Creek, Valerie Rowe sets out on a camping trip to the Adirondacks. An unexpected change of plans leaves her with an uncomfortable traveling party: two of her oddest friends, her rebellious daughter and her estranged husband’s fiancĂ©e. While Valerie is dealing with their issues, a pair of killers is roaming the woods. When her daughter disappears, her less than perfect camping trip turns into a fight for survival. Check out this thriller set in our own backwoods, if you dare.
Our tween, teen and adult patrons enjoy the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. In The Lightning Thief, book one of this series, Percy discovers that he is more than human at Camp Half-Blood, a state-of-the-art training facility for young demigods. Unfortunately, Percy is wrongfully accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. Join him as he masters his new powers and seeks to clear his name. Suspect that you might be a half-blood? Visit rickriordan.com for a quiz that determines your demigod status along with a map of Camp Half-Blood and a Daily Activity Schedule. Our Young Adult Specialist, Krista Briggs, recommends you revisit this beloved series before seeing the newly released film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in theaters.
For our younger readers, we have Cam Jansen and the Summer Camp Mysteries: A Super Special by David A. Adler. Cam and her best friend Eric head to Camp Eagle Lake where they find outdoor adventure and three unexpected mysteries. Cam uses her photographic memory to solve these mysteries and makes new friends along the way.
We hope you are having fun with our Summer Reading Challenge. It’s not too late to participate! Just grab a reading log at the Patron Services desk and use a shovel sticker to mark each book you complete. For every geological era completed, you’ll get a ticket for a chance to win a summer gift bag filled with treats: North Country red wine, New York maple syrup, maple sugar candies, Harmony Farm honey, raspberry jam, Noble Farm beef jerky, Wild Water skin and bath products, gift certificates to The Glow and The Blackbird CafĂ©, a reading mug, a library t-shirt, a Book of Secrets and a Groundbreaking Reads journal. Reading logs must be turned in to the Patron Services desk by Friday, August 23rd. The winner will be announced on Monday, August 26th.

Children’s Programs
Children's programming will resume in September when school begins. Until then, remember to complete and return your child's Reading Record to the children's room for a prize bag.

Teen Events
We continue to go “Beneath the Surface” during our teen Summer Reading Program. Join the Anime Club on Wednesdays at 3pm for a supernatural adventure set in the Tokyo Underworld. Be prepared for gang wars, shady medical experiments and a headless motorcycle rider.
Teen programs are designed for ages 13-19. For more information, email kbriggs@ncls.org or call 386-3712.

CFLoquence: News and Reviews From Your Library

Midsummer Reads
If you’re like me, you’re cringing a bit at the sight of back to school sales. While the sale signs are meant to build hype for the upcoming school year, they remind everyone that summer flies by too quickly. By August, we’re left trying to cram every bit of seasonal fun into those last warm weeks: berry-picking, cookouts, trips to the beach, long family walks, and reading outdoors. If this sounds familiar, the Canton Free Library has many books to help you enjoy summer to the fullest, from cookbooks to guides to the Adirondack trails. Stop by to find books to plan your summer expeditions and discover new fiction to savor by the campfire.
Pick up Bobby Flay’s Boy Gets Grill to experiment with new barbeque recipes. Feeling adventurous? Try his “Smoky-Sweet Rotisserie Apricot-Chipotle-Glazed Lamb Tacos with Goat Cheese and Salsa Cruda” or “Grilled Split Lobsters with Curry Butter.” If you prefer a more traditional barbeque, he has recipes for brisket sandwiches, steak, corn on the cob, maple-glazed sweet potatoes and much more. Flay’s cookbook also includes cocktails and simple desserts, and well as beginner’s tips and techniques.
If you’re interested in trekking through the lovely Adirondacks this summer, check out 50 Hikes In the Adirondacks by Barbara McMartin. The author uses her vast personal experience in this comprehensive and well-organized guide. McMartin provides useful facts (distance, hiking time, maps) as well as colorful historical incidents. Before you set out, get inspired by Carl E. Heilman II’s Adirondacks: Views of an American Wilderness. Heilman’s collection is filled with gorgeous panoramic photographs of the national park we’re lucky to have in our own backyard.
Escape through fiction to Seaview, Rhode Island with New York socialite Lily Dane in A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams. Lily’s idyllic summer is interrupted by the arrival of the Greenwalds, her former fiancĂ© and best friend now married to each other. While Lily is in the midst of an emotional storm, the hurricane of 1938 hits her summer home. This novel is the perfect beach read for fans of the 1930s.
For more great titles, come browse the shelves at the Canton Free Library. We invite you to camp out in our comfy chairs and spend the day reading. And there’s still time to join our Summer Reading Challenge! Just pick up a reading log at the Patron Services desk to keep track of your summer reading, and then place a shovel in a geological period for each book you explore.
Local Author Donation
Patrons Meg and Glenn Clemens have coauthored a nonfiction text titled Forgotten Algebra with Barbara Lee Bleau PhD. We’re pleased the Clemens have donated this book to our collection. Recapture algebra skills at your own pace with these lessons and exercises.
Teen Events
Our Summer Reading Program continues into August. Go “Beneath the Surface” with the Anime Club and Young Adult Specialist Krista Briggs on Wednesdays at 3pm for a teen adventure series set in the Tokyo Underworld.
On Monday, August 12th at 3pm, gather for a writing workshop with author Amanda Von Hoffmann. We’ll create our own fantasy heroes. This is not your ordinary English class!
The following Monday, monster movie experts Misty and Jon Hagen lead a workshop on how to survive that which lurks beneath the surface. The Hagens’ workshop was wildly popular last year. Don’t miss it!
Programs are designed for ages 13-19. For more information, email kbriggs@ncls.org or call 386-3712.

Ms. Val would like to thank the many children and families who participated in the "Dig into Reading" Summer Reading Program. It was a fun and busy month full of books, music, movement, games, artwork, and library friends! Children's programming will resume in September when school begins. Until then, please remember to complete and return your child's Reading Record to the children's room for a prize bag.
We hope you are having many wonderful summer adventures! For a list of Canton Free Library’s recent additions to the collection and our hours of service, visit cantonfreelibrary.org and “like” us on Facebook.
