CFLoquence: News and Reviews from Your Library

Thank you, voters! Proposition #3 passed, providing an additional $12,000 of funding for the Canton Free Library and its branches. This amount replaces funding lost due to county budget cuts, and it allows us to continue offering quality materials and programs to the community. We truly appreciate your support.
As summer approaches, we hope you enjoy the many activities we have planned for all ages. We promise our unique blend of educational, weird and wonderful events!

Teen Events
Come play our new table top games on YA Wednesdays from 3-5 pm. We have Settlers of Catan, Dixit, Munchkin, Small World, Ticket to Ride, Last Night on Earth, Tsuro, Elder Sign, Pandemic, Zombie Dice, Castle Panic, and Cthulhu Gloom. In July Krista, our Young Adult Specialist, takes you “Beneath the Surface” for our teen Summer Reading Program. Contact Krista at 386-3712 ext. 3 or kbriggs@ncls.org for more info.

Krista Recommends:  Krestin Gier's Ruby Red. “I am currently reading Sapphire Blue, the second in the Ruby Red Trilogy. It picks up right where the first book left off, which is good because it was such a cliffhanger! Time travelers are definitely a refreshing deviation from the sea of dystopian YA fiction (though I do love me some dystopia)!”

Local History Event
Adirondack history buffs, join us on June 10th at 6:30 pm for a presentation on the Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was part of Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to relieve poverty and unemployment during the Depression. The CCC built trails and damns, fought fires, stocked fish and planted millions of trees in our lovely wilderness. Author and historian Marty Podskoch will discuss the history and lore of the CCC camps in New York. CCC alumni are encouraged to attend and share their memories. Contact the library for more info: 386-3712.

Novel Ideas from Amanda: Addicted to Downton Abbey like me? Check out the Maisie Dobbs mystery series by Jacqueline Winspear, set in England during the same time period.  Maisie has the best characteristics of the Downton women: Mary’s cleverness, Sybil’s empathy and Anna’s determination. Follow her adventures in a world where women’s roles were being challenged and reinvented. Not your cup of tea? Don’t even like tea or British historical fiction? Check out our popular new releases. The long awaited thriller Inferno by Dan Brown has arrived. Inferno is the fourth book in the series which began with the controversial novel The Da Vinci Code.  For our fantasy lovers, we have Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris. Dead Ever After is the final installment in the beloved Southern Vampire Mysteries, also known as The Sookie Stackhouse Novels.
